Litter and Illegal Dumping

Why are litter and illegal dumping a problem for Pickering?

To some residents this may not seem like the most serious problem affecting our environment, but illegal dumping and litter:
  • represent a breeding ground for fire and disease
  • degrade water quality
  • may cause injury to pets, wildlife, residents and children
  • discourage economic development by lowering real estate values
  • cost taxpayers money − on average the cost to clean up illegally dumped garbage exceeds $100,000 each year

What is the City doing to address litter and illegal dumping?

In addition to directing City staff to clean up litter and garbage, Pickering:
  • helps coordinate community clean-up programs
  • enforces its anti-dumping and anti-littering by-laws

What can you do to clean up litter and garbage?

  • Pick up trash when you see it. If you see debris scattered around, pick it up to discourage more people from littering in that area.
  • Host a Pitch-in Party! Gather your neighbours, family, workplace, school or association and donate some time to cleaning up a local greenspace, stream, trail, road or neighbourhood.  The City provides bags & gloves and will pick up and dispose of the waste at the end of your event. Call 905.420.4660, ext. 2043.
  • Do not pick up dangerous articles.  If you spot needles, weapons, unlabelled chemical containers or other potentially dangerous articles, call the City of Pickering Operations Centre at 905.683.4319.
  • Take your own waste to the Miller Waste Durham Transfer Station at 1220 Squires Beach Road, Pickering.  It is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Saturday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.
  • Dispose of household hazardous waste for FREE to any one of Durham Regions waste disposal facilities
  • Report offenders.  Littering and dumping is a crime.  If you see someone illegally dumping take note of the time, date, location, vehicle and violator description and the type of materials being discarded.  Report offenders either to the City of Pickering’s Municipal Law Enforcement Services at 905.683.7575 or the Durham Regional Police at 905.683.9100.
  • Set a good example.  Do not be part of the problem by illegal dumping or littering, and encourage others to maintain the same sense of civic pride and public responsibility for our parks, public areas and environmentally sensitive areas.
