Community Clean-up Initiatives
Pickering’s community clean-up initiatives include:
• 20-Minute Pickering Makeover
Starting in 2005, the City of Pickering joined forces with neighbouring municipalities to conduct a GTA wide 20-Minute Makeover. It’s a chance for all of us to take a break, get outside for 20 minutes and pick up litter around our streets, parks, schools and workplace. Since 2005 over 48,000 participants have taken part in this annual event. Plan to join us in 2010 to clean up litter around the City. View 2009 photos. Register your business, school, family, community group or neighbourhood association. Supplies are free. Call 905.683.7575 to register. Thanks to our event sponsors: Pizza Pizza, The Toronto Star, McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada, The Home Depot, The Toronto Sun, Tim Hortons, and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. Also, check out the brochure Safety First: Simple Steps for a safe litter clean-up event. • TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Every year in September, thousands of volunteers across the country unite to eliminate aquatic garbage. The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup began in 1994. In 2008 over 63,000 Canadians registered to clean up shorelines. The City of Pickering and Toronto & Region Conservation Authority’s (TRCA) Frenchman’s Bay Project helped local community and cadet groups register, provided clean-up supplies, and hosted a local event so that individuals and families not involved with a larger group could participate. Host a Pitch-in Party anytime from April to November. Gather your neighbours, family, workplace, school or association and donate some time to cleaning up a local greenspace, creek, trail or neighbourhood. The City can even suggest some areas that need a helping hand. The City will provide bags & gloves and will pick up and dispose of the waste at the end of your event. Call the City of Pickering at 905.420.4660, ext. 2043 to get involved. Check out the brochure Safety First: Simple Steps for a safe litter clean-up event. |
